Sleepwalking into a Taiwan war (that could go nuclear)
Dear Colleagues and friends,
I wish I could share more favorable news, but the Taiwan scenario is far too volatile to ignore—lest we end up "sleepwalking" into disaster on our present course. In this wide-ranging discussion about the Taiwan scenario with Scott Horton, I broach the question of whether the relatively candid admission of U.S. soldiers serving presently on Taiwan (and Jinmen) constitutes a significant escalation from Washington's side. I also discuss in some detail the dangerous proposal made by a DC think tank during the autumn of 2023 that proposes the U.S. get serious about deploying nuclear weapons first in a Taiwan scenario in order to defend the island. I think that would be extremely foolish and irresponsible. Sorry to bring you all these troubling developments and I wish everyone the best.
Best regards,
Lyle
Lyle Goldstein on why he thinks war over Taiwan is alarmingly likely
Lyle Goldstein returns to the show to talk about some concerning developments in the Pacific. Goldstein explains why he thinks violence breaking out over the island of Taiwan is a very real possibility in the next couple of years. He and Scott discuss the recent deployment of U.S. special forces to Taiwanese-controlled Islands right on China’s coast, the growing willingness among American foreign policy intellectuals to consider the deliberate use of nuclear weapons if it appears a Chinese invasion is underway, and much more.
